Corporate & Social Responsibility Goals for Wal-Mart Suppliers

SupplyManagement.com today released an article highlighting Wal-Mart's initiative to ensure its suppliers meet environmental and social standards.

A new supplier agreement announced during a recent summit in China requires factories to comply with environmental and social standards in the countries in which they operate.

It is expected the scheme will be operational by 2009 and cover vendors worldwide by 2011.

Energy efficiency and less use of natural resources is also on the horizon with the retailer expected to drive further improvements in the future.

Lee Scott, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores is quoted as stating "Maintaining the trust of our customers is tied hand in hand with improving the quality of our supplier factories and their products. Cheating on the quality of products is the same as cheating our customers and we will not tolerate that at Wal-Mart."
